Empowering the Visually Impaired in Rural India
In rural parts of India, most kids who are visually impaired, especially girls, are left out of traditional schools. Braille education is rare, books in that form are limited, and even when students are eager to learn, the tools just aren’t there.
Light of Letters is changing that. Their programs bring education, dignity, and opportunity to visually impaired youth in places where they wouldn’t otherwise be.
Through our partnership, smartphones donated to Kids Connect are transformed into accessible learning tools. Each phone is programmed to feature talk-to-text, screen readers, DAISY protocol technology for interactive audio learning, and large text settings. These tools, paired with pre-downloaded apps like Bookshare that give access to 1M+ accessible books, are changing not only education for these kids but also giving them opportunities that once felt impossible.
